Train Kept A Rollin (2024): Em/86
This is my cover of Train Kept A Rollin by the Yardbirds. The Yardirds were an iconic group formed in England in 1963. They were progressive and played a lot of blues and hard rock. They were also a band who had Eric Clapton playing lead guitar. When Clapton left to join John Mayall's Bluesbreakers he recommended a guitarist named Jeff Beck. Beck played with them for a while and when their Bassist left he recommended Jimmy Page to fill in on bass. Page was a renowned studio musician in England at the time. Later the band got a bassist and Beck and Page both played guitar together. I saw the Yardbirds in Vancouver at the Kerrisdale Arena on July 30, 1967. I went with Lawrie Sherman who played guitar with Shades of Black. Danny Harrison, Bob Grant and Daryle Sherman (no relation) were also in Shades Of Black. Danny, Bob and Allan Doner (RIP) were working at a mill in Port Alberni that summer. Lawrie and I were blown away by the Yardirds who had Jimmy Page playing lead guitar at that concert. After the Yardbirds broke up Page would go on to form a new band with Robert Plant, John Bonham and John Paul Jones. They were going to call the band the "New Yardbirds" but when discussing the name with some friends someone said that would go over like a "lead balloon" and someone else quipped "you mean a lead zeppelin?" Thus Led Zeppelin were born.
I played this one octave lower on the bass guitar and also put in a track playing the main riff on my Epi Les Paul on the low E string to give my cover a more solid bottom end.
